Dual Naming Map
Learn the Menang Noongar place names of the Kwoorabup (Denmark) region and discover the meanings and stories embedded within the landscape. This map provides an introduction to the enduring connections between language, culture and Country, and invites us to see familiar places through a deeper cultural lens.
The original dual naming display was developed in 2012 by a dedicated group of Denmark Environment Centre volunteers, led by Tony Pedro and Harley Coyne, using the journal of A. Hillman’s 1833 journey from Albany to Nornalup. Guided by a local Aboriginal tracker known as Mopie, Hillman’s journal documented many of the Noongar place names that have helped inform this resource.
The display has been on permanent exhibition in the Denmark Environment Centre for more than a decade, where it has become a popular educational resource for visitors, schools and the local community. In 2024, the display was refreshed and redesigned by Holly Pepper, incorporating the dual naming adopted through the Shire of Denmark’s consultation process with relevant stakeholders, including local Menang Noongar representatives.
